I used the framing style of the DVDs I bought too. I think it worked quite well.
So I shall explain my thinking:
I think my speciality has always been relatively moody, film noir-esque shots, so I decided to play on my strengths.
In the example, there's a typical film noir pose: I dude in a shirt and tie leaning against a gritty wall (We all know film noir is super gritty).
However, in keeping with my theme, I used myself as the model, but also left my face out of it. This adds a layer of uncertainty and interpretation because you can't tell what he's thinking.
The subtle colour change also gives the world captured in the photos a more negative looking outlook.
The framing can also represent the uncertainty within the character.
In addition, I took the picture off centre to keep the focus from being on just the figure, and instead the whole composition of the picture, including the decaying wall in the background.
